Educators have always been concerned with shaping students’ character to enable them to become engaged, responsible citizens who meaningfully interact in their own society to improve the world around them. With the growth of technology, a new focus in education has emerged. In our new digital world, it is imperative that we equip students to become ethical digital citizens. So what is digital citizenship? Researchers at the University of New Hampshire have defined digital citizenship as: online respect and online engagement to accomplish youth citizenship goals. The same citizenship goals of honesty, integrity, and meaningfully interacting with others that are expected in the real world must be taught in the digital world too.

It is imperative that students learn to show others respect when interacting digitally. Students can learn and socialize online safely respectfully by remembering to think before they post. If it is not something you would say in person, it should not be said online. Because of the nature of the internet, everything posted leaves a digital footprint. Students should keep this in mind before posting. If the post is unfit for parents, teachers, or future bosses to see, it should not be posted.
